KEN GUNN, DISTRICT 3

It is time for a change in Berkeley County and I am proud to announce my candidacy for the Berkeley County Council district 3 seat.

Throughout my life I have had the privilege of wearing many titles. They include Vietnam veteran, volunteer firefighter, husband, father and grandfather. Another title that I proudly wear is that of Conservative Republican. I am a conservative Republican because I believe that the best way for our county to foster opportunity and remain competitive is through lower taxes and controlling government spending. After researching Councilman Bob Call's record, I was disappointed to discover that he is anything but a conservative. Mr. Call has routinely sided with the Democrats to be the pivotal vote for higher taxes, increased spending and was the deciding vote to close the Goose Creek Satellite office. In other words, he has not been representing the conservative values of his constituents.

If the voters of district 3 give me the privilege to serve as their County Councilman, I promise:

  • I will fight to return 100 percent of property tax relief money back to the taxpayers
  • I will fight to reopen the Goose Creek satellite office
  • I will fight to end the county practice of withholding tax revenues from the Berkeley County School District
  • I will fight for a more open, accountable and transparent county government.

I ask for your vote on Tuesday June 12th and I ask for your help. If you would be willing to volunteer for our campaign please contact me at 843-499-2244 or kengunnbc@gmail.com. This is truly a grass roots effort and together we can take back our county.

God Bless

Ken Gunn

Candidate for Berkeley County Council District 3

MYSTIFYING

GE&P read with interest the story in this week's Berkeley Independent about Councilman Call's announcement that he intends to stand for re-election. Even more interesting, we enjoyed the comments posted to the story. This morning, when we went to the site to check for more comments, Glory Be, the story had seemingly disappeared. "Whas up wit' dat?"

UPDATE: We found the story on the back page. Click on "News" in the top banner.

WELL, DUH

GE&P has repeatedly contended that, on the whole, every SC redistricting process has devolved into a form of legalized segregation, even on the local level. Now, it seems GE&P has a bit of company in our assessment of the situation. Six Black voters have challenged the current SC redistricting plans submitted to DOJ by the state legislature. These plans concern the 124 State House districts and the 7 US Congressional districts.

Rep. Bakari Sellers, D-Denmark, has testified before the federal three-judge panel hearing the challenge that the redistricting process has "packed" certain districts with Black voters while leaving other districts comprised, almost entirely, of White voters. Rep. Sellers contends this process, in affect, "re-segregates" the voting districts in SC. Rep. Sellers is correct.

GE&P agrees completely with Rep. Sellers' contention that the redistricting process segregates our voting population but we disagree with his assessment as to the "WHY" of the process. Rep. Sellers stated the predominant factor used in the process was "race". GE&P contends, if we are to be completely accurate, the word "race" should be replaced with the words "Political Party".

On this issue, Liberals find themselves in somewhat of a conundrum. It is a demonstrated fact that Liberal Democrats, whether Black or White, have a great deal of difficulty getting elected in SC. Historically, these Liberals have stood a better chance of election if the voting block was predominately Black. Now, it would seem, this mindset is proving unacceptable to many Black voters.

For decades the Liberal leadership has taken the Black vote for granted. The leadership just "assumed" every Black voter would blindly follow the Liberal drumbeat and vote as they "should". Unfortunately for the Liberal leadership, many Black voters are voicing their resentment of this assumption. Consequently, we see the challenges to the redistricting plans.

If anyone needs to see irrefutable proof that "race" is no longer the predominate factor in SC elections, all one has to do is look at the results of the 1st Congressional race where Congressman Tim. Scott won, walking away, in an 80% White District. This result blows a big hole in the Liberal contention that a Black candidate cannot be elected in SC without gerrymandering of the District lines. The fact is that a Liberal Democrat cannot get elected in SC without gerrymandering the District lines.

These same Liberals would go into fits, and rightfully so, if anyone suggested that Blacks could only live in certain areas, only eat at certain restaurants, or only attend certain schools. Why, then, are they proposing that all Black citizens be restricted to only certain voting Districts? Liberal Democrats can claim no intellectual integrity in this argument. GE&P contends, if segregation is wrong in one situation, and it is, it is wrong in every situation.

GE&P has confidence that this panel of federal judges will stand with the citizens protesting this redistricting plan and rule that segregation on any level is WRONG and, therefore, UNACCEPTABLE.

SLEEP ON, BC SCHOOL DISTRICT; ALL IS WELL

When Supervisor Davis managed to change the rules on the distribution of FILOT funds realized from the Mount Holly Park, which resulted in depriving the School District of MILLIONS of dollars annually, surprisingly, there was no general outrage. Mr. Davis accomplished this feat by 'hook and by crook', mostly 'crook'. In case you are not aware of the fact, it is NOT legal to amend an Ordinance by Resolution.

It would now appear that this success has emboldened Mr. Davis into taking an even more draconian move. On the agenda for next Monday's Finance Committee meeting, there is a little item that should be of interest to not only the School District but the taxpayers of BC. Item "B" suggests a new "Ordinance providing for the allocation of revenues generated by the Berkeley/Williamsburg Joint Industrial and Business Park;" and the complete repeal of "Ordinance No. 96-1-2, as amended, in its entirety; and repealing all Resolutions pertaining to the allocation of revenues generated by the Joint Industrial and Business Park in the entirety." These are Mr. Davis' words, not ours.

Being as history has proven that Mr. Davis, when given the opportunity, will not hesitate to take revenue earmarked for the schools and use these monies to his own benefit, why would the School District stand silently by and allow yet another theft to take place? To date, the School District has lost multi MILLIONS of dollars from the Mount Holly FILOT. If Mr. Davis is allowed to write his own ticket with the FILOT derived from the entire county, does anyone think the division will be fairer to the School District than that of Mount Holly?

HOLD EVERYTHING!!! What are we thinking? There's no problem here, no matter how much money Mr. Davis steals from the School District. The School District will simply find a way to raise our taxes to recoup the shortfall. What the hey, float some bonds, raise the millage. There's nothing happening here, Folks, just move along.

"IF" BIGGEST LITTLE WORD IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE

According to our esteemed leader, Supervisor Dan Davis, Berkeley County is "on the cusp of phenomenal growth and incredible prosperity". If his assessment is correct, in the near future, we will all be drinking that free Bubble-Up and eating that Rainbow Stew.

Word to the wise: READ THE FINE PRINT

It seems there are a few "IFs" on which this rosy scenario balances.

IF the economy improves and Boeing expands....

IF support businesses decide to locate in BC....

IF BC can "find" revenue for more infrastructure projects.....

IF BC floats $MILLIONS in bonds....

IF BC continues to keep the 29% of our property tax relief.......

IF BC continues to cheat the School System out of their share of the FILOT.....

IF housing development materializes along Hwy. 176.....

IF BC taxpayers can endure higher taxes/debt.....

IF DD can manage to maintain his Democrat/RINO support on Council....

AND, the biggest IF of all....IF none of the myriad of interconnected wheels fall off this pie-in-the-sky wagon. With all these balls in the air, the law of averages dictates that one is bound to hit the ground.

When GE&P analyzes this plan in its entirety, we are forced to one inevitable conclusion:

"IF" FROGS HAD WINGS, THEY WOULDN'T BUMP THEIR ARSES ON THE GROUND

UPDATE ON SCAM ALERT

Considering the attention to the matter, GE&P was confident that BC government would come up with some "legitimate" reason why a private citizen could be fined $50 for selling wares along side the road in an unincorporated area of BC. BC government did NOT let us down.

It now seems, after two position adjustments already, the County has settled on the perfect justification for their actions. "They were only enforcing the Fire Code". This is a very plausible position to establish as we all know how potentially dangerous it could be should one be unfortunate enough to get caught under an awning during a fire. One would only have FOUR unimpeded avenues of escape to traverse, at most, twenty feet.

This entire situation would be funny if it weren't so obviously ridiculous. "If you give them an inch, they will take a mile" seems to apply to more than your four year old.

EDITORIAL COMMENTS- PIPE DREAMS

The last three years have provided indisputable proof that the 2012 election will be the most pivotal in our lifetime. The American people will decide whether this country will remain on the path to socialism or make the uncomfortable adjustments to restore our Republic to the original intent of our founding fathers. With the stakes this high, you would think Conservatives would would have given their strategy a bit more thought. After all, one would think the survival of the Republic should take priority over the personal ambitions of individual candidates.

It is common knowledge that splitting the opposition vote is a bad idea if you wish to unseat an incumbent or get a certain candidate selected in a primary. The results of such an effort are never positive. Being as all agree that this is a revolutionary election that demands revolutionary ideas, the historic manner in which the Republican primaries are conducted just may not have been the best way to go.

That brings us to the theory GE&P would like to put forward:

What would have been the result if the Conservative (and not so Conservative) candidates had met for a long weekend well BEFORE time for the caucuses, primaries AND FILINGS. This meeting would have included Santorum, Gingrich, Bachman, Cain, Perry and, yes, Paul. Since each of these candidates have certain strengths and weaknesses, egos should have been checked at the door and intelligent, rational thought should have been allowed to take control of the process.

Right out of the chute, it would have been agreed upon that Paul should be designated Secretary of Constitutional Government. Advising him would be a panel of twelve Constitutional scholars headed by, say, Dr. Peter Johnson, Jr. This panel would review existing Federal Laws and determine which violate the Constitution, especially the 10th Amendment. Documents would, then, be drafted and presented to the Congress for repeal of said law. This suggestion would surely prompt Paul to jump on board.

Next, it would be agreed upon that Gingrich would be appointed Secretary of State. His knowledge of Foreign Policy would put him in the position of being an excellent advisor to the administration on all associated issues.

Now the changes become a bit more complicated. Since, in Texas, Perry has demonstrated talent for creating jobs, he should be determined to be the Secretary of Labor. This Labor Department would not be the existing department. It would be a combination of all the existing departments that handle labor issues, including but not limited to the NLRB and Department of Commerce. All of the existing departments, bureaus, commissions, etc that pertain to labor issues would be abolished. The motto for the new department would be: "Our goal is to keep the nose of government out of business's business."

Since Santorum consistently demonstrates that his moral compass is unshakable, he could be trusted to head the new Department of Common Sense. This new department would oversee and suggest policy for all things government giveaway from grants to welfare programs. All existing Federal agencies involved in these activities would be abolished, including but not limited to DHHS and the Department of Education.

Cain would be the nominee to run for President. Since dependable polls indicate that, among the voting public, admitted Conservatives outnumber admitted Liberals 2 to 1, with the addition of 50% of the Liberal minority vote that Mr. Cain would attract, his election should be assured. This assessment in no way should be interpreted as demeaning Mr. Cain's talents and abilities or his qualifications to hold office. The numbers are just icing on the cake.

Bachman would be the choice for VP for much of the same reasons as stated above except we must replace "Liberal minorities" with "Liberal women". Again, this stated advantage in no way demeans or diminishes her accepted qualifications to hold this office.

After these initial determination are made, the whole group would decide which talent could be tapped to head the new Department of Finance, possibly Cantor. This department, with advice and consent of the original 6, would address abolishing the IRS and formulating a new tax system. (This would be yet another carrot dangled in the face of Paul) Additionally, the "TICKET" could add other co-runners to address additional problems plaguing existing government. Abolishing the EPA and starting the process to repeal Obamacare would be the first actions taken by the new administration.

Considering the fact that, so far in the process, Romney has been able to garner an average of only 30% of the vote, it is more than possible that this newly created "TICKET" would be alarmingly successful. But ultimate success would hinge on the unlikely probability that the candidates, as well as the voting public, would put the good of the Republic ahead of their individual ambitions and egos.

GE&P does not suggest that this "TICKET" would be the only way to go. The 6 could have possibly arranged the assignments in a different order. We have only suggested ONE possibility. If the original candidates had adopted some form of this option, the "LEFT" would not have accumulated the amount of ammunition for the general election that is now the case. With the existing system, each candidate has done a very good job of discrediting the others.

Now, we are ready to hear all the reasons why such a system would be unworkable. Also, if you agree with the idea, we would like to hear your suggestions for additions to the "TICKET". Have at it.
